F1 German Grand Prix: Alonso: Points miss only downside for McLaren

Fernando Alonso feels McLaren head into the summer break with plenty to feel positive about and the only regret from the German Grand Prix was him missing out on more potential points.

The Spaniard, who celebrated turn 35 at Hockenheim, says it was a relatively unspectacular race for him in Germany after slipping out of the points in the closing stages losing out to cars on quicker rubber in the charge to the chequered flag.

Alonso felt a second consecutive points finish was realistic having taken seventh in Hungary but despite missing out he believes a haul of 24 points from the first half of the season - over double the amount of his total points in 2015 - is reason to be satisfied with the team's recent progress.

"It was a pretty standard race, as were weren't really quick and at the end we got no points, which was the goal for today," Alonso said. "It's a shame that way, but it's a bit the way this first part of the season has gone."

"I'm very happy with the way this first part of the season went for us, it's a shame we couldn't get a few more points here with both cars.

"We also lost the opportunity of a double score in Budapest last week, but in the battle with Toro Rosso we gained a few points, so it was a good race and the only downside is that I didn't finish in the points.

"I only took part in 10 of the 12 races - I had the accident in Australia and couldn't take part in the next race - and scored 24 points, the double of what I score for the whole of last year. We're clearly moving up and that's satisfying."

After Alonso's team-mate Jenson Button grabbed eighth place in Germany McLaren moved to within three points of Toro Rosso in the F1 world constructors' championship.
