YMR is best team of 2018 according to WTCR media
International journalists reporting on the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO have voted YMR as their team of 2018.
The French squad’s WTCR OSCARO bid was only put in place in the weeks leading up to the inaugural race in Morocco, but driver/boss Yvan Muller and team-mate Thed Björk combined to give YMR the teams’ title by three points ahead of BRC Racing Team at the Macau season showdown.
Spanish journalist Tamara Aller (TodoRacing) recalls the team’s efforts to repair Björk’s Hyundai i30 N TCR – after it was badly damaged in the multi-car accident in Race 1 in Vila Real – to enable the Swede to start and win Race 3 the following day.
“They not only kept fighting and extracting the most out of a new car, they received a burnt car but presented it for scrutineering the next day as good as new,” Aller recalls of YMR’s heroics in Portugal.
András Lantos of WTCblog.hu and a commentator for Eurosport Hungary wrote: “They merged two very different groups of people (YMR and Cyan Racing), acquired the cars very late, but still won the teams’ championship and almost the drivers’ championship as well.”
Pedro Mendes of Chicane Motores in Portugal was an admirer of YMR’s will to succeed. “They gave everything to put the best cars in the hands of the both drivers. That resulted in the team title in the end of the season.”
Motorsport-Total.com’s Markus Lüttgens voted for YMR’s main rival BRC Racing Team, the German commenting: “Although they lost the fight for the teams’ title by a margin, they were incredibly successful without any experience of racing on a world level.”
ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport, Boutsen Ginion Racing, Comtoyou Racing, DG Sport Compétition and Team Mulsanne also received votes.
TouringCarTimes.com’s Neil Hudson selected Comtoyou as his team of 2018. The British journalist explained why: “Having seen this small Belgian team develop has been quite something. At the start of 2018, running four cars looked like they’d overextended themselves, but they plugged away and, by the last half of the year, all four drivers were consistent scorers, culminating in a first victory for Frédéric Vervisch at Macau of all places. They’ll be trouble in 2019.”
