WTCR media vote Tarquini best driver of 2018
Title-winning ace Gabriele Tarquini has been voted best driver of 2018 by a selection of international journalists reporting on the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO.
Tarquini, driving a BRC Racing Team Hyundai i30 N TCR, grabbed the inaugural WTCR OSCARO crown by three points in a thrilling season showdown in Macau last month, aged 56.
It was an achievement that struck a chord with a number of writers, including Michael Bräutigam from German weekly Motorsport Aktuell. “Like a good wine, it seems Gabriele is getting better and better every year. He was the most complete and consistent driver, an example for both old and young drivers.”
Mattias Persson, who writes for Bilsport in Sweden, agreed: “For 56-year-old Tarquini to come out on top of that pack was impressive and fully deserved of the world title. It was fitting that the first-ever WTCR race winner also became the series’ inaugural champion.”
Francesco Corghi of Motorsport.com’s Italian site wrote: “He’s too old but too experienced for all to beat him! Very fast, very intelligent. A real world champion.”
Yann Ehrlacher, Yvan Muller and Jean-Karl Vernay all received votes with AUTOhebdo’s Medhi Casaurang-Vergez picking Muller as his number one of 2018.
“To finish runner-up as well as managing his own team is truly remarkable,” Casaurang-Vergez observed. “And he came back from retirement, which did not seem to have any affect on his abilities.”
