Magnussen eyes F1 titles with Renault

Kevin Magnussen says the important thing for him this year is to ensure he does enough to be retained by Renault and to ensure he is still around when Renault is back winning and challenging for championships.

After the late-purchase of the former Lotus F1 Team, 2016 was always going to be difficult for the Enstone squad and the opening two races having borne that out, with Magnussen on the fringes of the points in both Australia and Bahrain.

Quizzed on his goals for the year, Magnussen added that at this stage it is very much 'wait and see'.

"We still don't have a goal for the season because it is a transition year. The goal is to ramp everything up again, and we don't know where we can get to. We have to do our best at the moment and see where it takes us," he explained in the countdown to next weekend's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

"The overall goal, however, is to become world champion, for the team to win the world championship. That's the goal, and we know it can't happen this year or probably not next year.

"[But] that is what we are working towards and this year doesn't matter so much," he added.

Having been first demoted from race driver to reserve with McLaren at the end of 2014, and then dropped at the end of last year, the Dane knows though, that he needs to make the most of this second chance.

"The main thing for me is to be around when Renault is winning world championships," he continued.

"I want it to be me that is winning them."
