James Hunt race helmet "rushes" to race retro
A race helmet used by one of Britain's most flamboyant F1 drivers, the late James Hunt, is undoubtedly the star automobilia lot at Silverstone Auctions' forthcoming Race Retro Sale on the 22nd and 23rd of February.
Offered with an estimate of between £18,000 to £25,000, the bell helmet was used by Hunt in his penultimate season in 1978 during his time with McLaren. Presented in black with three coloured stripes, the drivers name and Marlboro, Texaco and Goodyear advertising logos, the helmet is in excellent condition and is offered for sale for the first time in over 20 years.
Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: "It's fantastic that we've secured another item so closely linked to one of F1's greatest stars. Hunt was one of the true greats of the sport, bringing even more flair and excitement to a golden era for Formula One. It's wonderful to see renewed appreciation for the man, 21 years after his untimely death". The auction entry comes just days after it was announced that Hunt is to join MotorSport Magazine's Hall of Fame in 2014.
Joining the James Hunt helmet is a selection of other automobilia items including paintings, model cars and car parts. For the first time at the show, a lifestyle collection of luxury leather goods, watches, fine wines and antique jewellery will also be offered.
Nick added: "Our Race Retro sale is shaping up to be one of our best ever with a fantastic selection of competition cars, historic racers, motorsport memorabilia as well as stunning classic road cars."
