Herczig switches focus to Canarias after Azores ERC exit
Norbert Herczig is already focused on Rally Islas Canarias after his second season in the FIA European Rally Championship began with retirement in the Azores.
Herczig was making his first ERC start in his MOL Racing Team Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 but was facing an uphill task running first on the road on day two.
But the four-time Hungarian faced an even bigger challenge on the first stage of the afternoon loop when a steering issue took hold.
“A few hundred metres after the start there was a tight, left corner,” Herczig explained. “I started to turn but the steering wheel got stuck and would not move anymore. I had to reverse, I tried to continue, but I felt the steering getting worse and worse in each corner, so finally we stopped.
“To be honest I am very disappointed. I came to the Azores with a really good feeling and I can tell you we worked quite hard for getting ready. But things like this happen sometimes. Now we have nothing to do, just going forward and manage to be well prepared for the upcoming rally in Canarias.”
