F1 US GP: No penalty for Alonso after Massa clash

Stewards have decided not to penalise Fernando Alonso for his robust pass on Felipe Massa for sixth position in the closing stages of the United States Grand Prix.

On fresher tyres, McLaren-Honda's Alonso had surged onto the back of Carlos Sainz and Massa's battle for fifth position in the final laps of the Austin race, with the McLaren driver wasting no opportunity to make his presence felt with a bold lunge at turn 16.

Catching Massa unawares as he turned in, the two clashed front-wheels and ran wide off the circuit, with Alonso keeping the position, which would ultimately allow him to take fifth off Sainz before the chequered flag.

Massa, meanwhile, suffered a puncture in the incident but had a big enough margin behind him to make a pit-stop on the penultimate lap and retain seventh.

With the incident placed under investigation by stewards, they decided to take no further action, confirming Alonso in fifth.

"The Stewards examined the evidence and conclude that no driver was wholly or predominately to blame for the collision," read the FIA statement.
