F1 Monaco GP: Verstappen will learn from Monaco slip-ups - Horner

Max Verstappen won't make the same mistakes that scuppered his charge in the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix when he returns ot the Principality next year, believes Christian Horner.

Arriving in Monaco on the back of his sensational win in the Spanish Grand Prix, his first event in Red Bull colours, the 18 year-old was looking to maintain that momentum around the street venue only to suffer two costly crashes.

Starting from the pit-lane after hitting the wall at turn 15 in qualifying, Verstappen was making solid progress up the order and was inside the points on lap 33 when he ran his slick-shod Red Bull wide onto the damp outside line at Massenet and struck the barrier.

A disappointing turnaround for the highly-rated youngster, team principal Horner feels there are still plenty of positives to take from his race charge in the cirumstances.

"He'd had a very strong first half of the race, he'd made some great overtaking moves, he'd made good progress and was running in the top ten, and he was pushing on because basically he saw that Rosberg wasn't that far ahead.

"Unfortunately, the conditions just caught him out at the top of the hill. He wasn't the only one today to be caught out, but it's been a very contrasting weekend for him compared to two weeks ago."

Indeed, Horner believes the accidents will ultimately galvanise Verstappen to not make similar mistakes going forward.

"It's all part of the learning curve that he's on and I think that the trajectory that you can see is still extremely impressive. I only think that he's going to learn and we won't see him make the same mistakes next year.

"He's a bright, intelligent character and I think he'll take on board what has happened this weekend and he'll definitely move forward and learn from it."
