F1 Hungarian GP: ‘Stressed’ Alonso puzzled by track limits warning

Fernando Alonso says it was stressful to spend the final 20 laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix 'one metre away' from a penalty, even if he says he is confused as to how he racked up three warnings in the first place.

With track limits being strictly enforced at the Hungaroring following the implementation of electronic devices to more accurately measure infringements, drivers were informed that they would receive three warnings before a fourth breach resulted in a likely drive-through penalty.

Though no driver ultimately fell foul of the rules, both Alonso and Romain Grosjean came close with three indiscretions, though the McLaren-Honda driver was confused as to when he picked up his final warning.

"I was aware of the track limits but I don't know where the third moment happened," he said. "For the last 20 laps I was one metre away from the limits! That was quite stressful, but it's the way it is, the system worked fine all weekend."

Finishing exactly where he started in seventh place, Alonso was satisfied with the result as McLaren established itself as 'best of the rest' behind Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari

"In the end I was 7th also in the race, my position for the whole weekend," he continued. "It was a bit of a boring race, from us and for the fans but it was a good race for us, where we could score good points.

"We had a good start, we managed to do as many laps as planned with the super soft tyres and then also with the softs. I'm happy to be best of the rest, because Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari are way ahead of the rest of us. This is the battle we can have, and we did our best.

"Carlos and I had a similar pace, almost in the same tenth, and to be able to pass him at the start was fundamental for the final result. I was on the clean side of track and that was a bit lucky."
