WTCR-bound Volkswagen Golf GTI takes first title of 2018
Mehdi Bennani and Rob Huff will have a title-winning car at their disposal when they begin their respective bids for WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO glory in Morocco next month.
That's after Luca Engstler secured the TCR Middle East crown at the wheel of one of the Yokohama-equipped German racers last weekend.
Engstler, a 17-year-old from Germany, bagged the title honours in the Bahrain series finale and earned praise from Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets as a result.
"We would like to congratulate Luca and the Engstler team on their title in the TCR Middle East series," said Smeets. "The team once again showed what they are capable of, under extremely challenging conditions in Bahrain. We are obviously also pleased to see the first title of the year go to a Volkswagen driver and a Volkswagen customer team. This is a very promising start to the new season for the Golf GTI."
Bennani and Huff head Sébastien Loeb Racing's WTCR bid in 2018 with the Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakech opening the inaugural season from 7-8 April.
