Why the King didn’t win: Huff on WTCR season finale
King of Macau Rob Huff has explained why he wasn’t able to add to his staggering victory tally in Macau when the 2018 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO concluded on the Circuito da Guia last weekend.
Although Huff was unbeatable in qualifying, twice landing the DHL Pole Position in his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR and breaking his own lap record in a TCR car, the Briton was unable to land a record-extending Guia Race victory number 10, settling instead for third place in Race 1 and second positon in Race 3.
“A lot of people [will] ask me whether I’m disappointed, but I’ve had nine wins here so to share them around is not a problem,” Huff said following Race 3. “We had a great weekend and what you remember over the winter is how you finished [the season] and we finished strong.”
Huff continued: “I tried everything I could. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the win this time, but we got the best out of the weekend. We didn’t find the ideal Macau set-up – we were the fastest by a long shot in the narrow sectors, but we kept losing ground on the straights. This made overtaking incredibly difficult, since catching up with the car in front is one thing, but getting past is another. But the fact that we were still able to set the fastest time shows how much potential the Golf GTI TCR has.
“I’m very happy with the ending of our season. Huge thanks to Sébastien Loeb Racing and Volkswagen for the support this year, it’s been amazing what we’ve achieved and probably what we could have achieved, and hopefully we’ll put that together next year.”
