Unexpected WTCR podium cheers Huff
Rob Huff reckons his ‘unexpected' Race 1 podium points to a strong season in the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO, which got underway in Marrakech last weekend.
Huff drove his Sébastien Loeb Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR to third place in the opening counter at WTCR AFRIQUIA Race of Morocco, the first time the French squad had run the car in competitive conditions.
Although a puncture - while battling Thed Björk for sixth - ruled out more points in Race 2, he hit back with seventh place behind team-mate Mehdi Bennani in Race 3.
"To be on the podium for the first weekend we didn't expect and I'm not going to lie," said Huff, World Touring Car champion in 2012. "It was a very good first qualifying session and first race. It was good to get a podium, and also good for my team-mate Mehdi to get a podium at his home race on Sunday. It was also a great event for the spectators and a fantastic first weekend for the championship.
"I was a little unlucky with a puncture [in Race 2], which we believe was due to debris, as it was a slow puncture and then exploded six laps later. But to get some good points in this first weekend, this first race is exactly what we need. It was a strong performance for us and the team at a circuit where we thought we'd struggle. Our pace was good, and now we're third in the Teams' championship."
