RTL 7 reaffirms world touring car racing commitment with WTCR agreement
Television network RTL Netherlands has reaffirmed its commitment to top-level touring car racing by confirming it will broadcast highlights of all 10 planned events that make up the inaugural WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO through its RTL GP Motorsport platform.
With leading Dutch driver Tom Coronel the star attraction in a season when The Netherlands returns to the world touring car roster for a race at Zandvoort in mid-May, RTL 7 is also planning live coverage of selected race weekends. As well as broadcasting the on-track action, RTL 7's coverage will include footage from Coronel's famous TomCam - which will take viewers behind the scenes at WTCR events - while his Boutsen Ginion Racing Honda Civic TCR will carry several GoPro cameras to provide additional - and no doubt spectacular - material.
"With one of the most popular drivers to support and a WTCR race of their own to attend, it's only right that Dutch fans get to watch all the key action from the series as well as being treated to exclusive material courtesy of Tom Coronel's famous TomCam," said François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, the WTCR promoter. "So we are very pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with RTL 7, especially given the fact there's a prospect of some live race coverage to add to the existing planned output."
Marco Zwaneveld, RTL 7 Channel Co-ordinator, said: "Tom Coronel and RTL Netherlands have been a great team for many years. Together we have monitored the developments of TCR racing because we really believed in the concept. After it became clear that the FIA World Touring Car Championship would become the FIA World Touring Car Cup and use the TCR technical regulations there was just one goal: create the best package for Team Coronel in 2018. With the inaugural season of WTCR coming up we are looking forward to add a great new campaign to our collaboration. The year will be very special due to the fact that the WTCR will visit the Zandvoort circuit from 19-21 May. We are convinced the fans will enjoy some great racing in the dunes."
Coronel added: "It's great a deal is in place with RTL 7 to cover all the races and footage from my TomCam. With three races per weekend there's going to be some great action for viewers to enjoy."
Highlights of WTCR Race of Morocco are due to be broadcast from 16h00-1700 on 15 April.
