Remembering when… Australia’s Evans went on an ERC adventure
With all eyes on the Australian Grand Prix this weekend, it's time to look back at when a multiple Australian champion made his debut in the FIA European Rally Championship.
Eli Evans competed on auto24 Rally Estonia in 2014, driving a JAS Motorsport-run Honda Civic Type R after winning two titles in his homeland in a Honda Jazz built by the firm.
After the long journey to Estonia, he starred in the ERC 2WD class, leading the category through the opening three stages. Despite a subsequent crash, he was still on course for a podium until a heavy landing on a jump caused terminal damage.
Though he hasn't since been back to Europe, Evans and co-driver Glen Weston did claim his third Australian title last year in a Citroën Australia-entered DS3 R3T - including a fine 15th place overall on Rally Australia.
