Pressure and dreams: Lundberg gears up for ERC action
Elias Lundberg has said his inclusion in the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team’s FIA ERC3 Junior Championship campaign in 2019 is a dream come true, adding that he and new team-mate Grégoire Munster are under pressure to deliver title success.
Opel-backed drivers have won the ERC’s two-wheel-drive Junior crown four years running and 20-year-old Lundberg is aware a that a fifth title is a target for the highly-respected outfit.
“To work with professional people in a successful factory team has been a dream for as long as I can remember,” said the Swede. “For sure both myself and Grégoire have a bit of pressure on us as well. Opel has a great history in the ERC clinching four driver titles in a row in the Juniors. I will do what I can to continue on Opel Motorsport’s successful path and I can’t wait for the season to start.”
However, with no experience of any of the ERC Junior events, Lundberg admits he’s he’ll face a tough test in the Pirelli-supported category. “I know there is much to learn since I’m new to the long and tough rallies in the ERC. My co-driver, David Arhusiander, and I have the goal to win the championship. But we also know the ERC3 Junior class is really tough and the speed in the class will be at the absolute top level.
“We are new to the ERC and we meet some really fast guys that have been here before. We set ourselves high goals to be motivated to do better all the time.”
Lundberg is stepping up to the ERC for 2019 as his reward for winning the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup in Germany last season, a title won by compatriot Tom Kristensson in 2017.
