Pirelli’s ultrasofts set for F1 race debut at Monaco
Pirelli will give the new ultrasoft compound tyre its race debut at the Monaco Grand Prix, while also picking the supersofts and softs as expected.
After Pirelli announced the ultrasofts would make an appearance for the Canadian Grand Prix the purple-banded compound has had its debut moved forward two weeks for Monaco. The Italian manufacturer has copied its selections for Montreal by also picking its softest compound trio with the red-banded supersofts and yellow-banded softs.
To fall within the 2016 tyre regulations, teams have been given the opportunity to choose tyre options 14 weeks in advance for long-haul events, whereas the short-haul European races carry an eight-week deadline.
Following on from last year's rules, Pirelli has stated the supersofts and softs must be used at some point in the race in Monaco and those in Q3 qualifying will receive an extra set of purple ultrasofts. The teams are then free to choose the remaining sets available to each driver, with a maximum of 13 sets for the weekend.
The ultrasofts made their F1 debut during pre-season testing at Circuit de Catalunya and a rough lap time gain of 0.5s to 0.7s is predicted with the compound.
