Le Mans - Refuelling
When refueling, three mechanics are required. The first is in charge of the hose, the second operates the handles to open and close the valve and the last has the extinguisher in case of a fire. They must all be dressed in a fireproof suits, protective goggles and a helmet with the visor down.
Thirty seconds to fill the car. The flow of fuel is regulated for all classes. Only the tank capacity differs between each class. The quantity is calculated by computer using telemetry available to engineers in the pit box. The driver also has information about consumption on his dashboard.
At each refueling, the filling is done systematically. The pipe is composed of two pipes in one. The first is for gasoline, the second and largest is to vent air and vapour. When both tubes are coupled, mechanics know that the tank is full when the fuel goes into the vent pipe.
In total, the driver change, changing wheels and refueling require sixty to ninety seconds.
