Junior WRC in Germany: Local star tannert leads
Germany's Julius Tannert led the junior WRC section of ADAC Rallye Deutschland after an action-packed saturday in which the leaderboard was turned on its head.
He steered clear of trouble when others hit problems during the first pass of the revered Panzerplatte speed test and finished more than 12 minutes ahead of championship leader Nil Solans in his Ford Fiesta R2T.
"It was a difficult day, especially in the morning, but we stayed out of trouble and are very happy to be leading our home event now. The aim tomorrow is to maintain that position. Our approach of pushing but also being cautious has worked well so far," said Tannert.
Solans climbed back to second after retiring yesterday. With a fully-repaired car, he set fastest times on three of today's nine stages to keep his championship dream alive.
Nicolas Ciamin led overnight but fell foul of the tough conditions and bent his Fiesta's rear beam. Making running repairs, he crawled through two stages and amazingly nursed the car back to service where the M-Sport team swiftly fixed the issue.
Ciamin went on to win six stages but sits over a minute adrift of Solans with just four stages remaining.
Terry Folb retired in Panzerplatte after hitting a tree.
