Introducing WTCR’s Mr Unknown Factor
Gordon Shedden could catch out his rivals in the pursuit of WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO glory in 2018.
Shedden, by his own admission, is an "unknown factor" due to his limited experience away from the British Touring Car Championship, where he claimed three titles and 48 race wins.
He will partner Jean-Karl Vernay in a Team WRT Audi RS3 LMS starting starting with WTCR Race of Morocco in Marrakech from 7-8 April when he will be among the title contenders.
"I guess I'm the unknown factor, the one people don't know," he said. "Everybody has raced against each other in WTCC or TCR International and they know what to expect, but perhaps nobody knows about me.
"I'm a driver who's clinical and gets the job done. I have 11 years' experience in the British Touring Car Championship, which is undoubtedly one of the hardest touring car series in the world. You don't win three of those without knowing how to race a touring car."
As well as facing up to a number of new rivals this season, Shedden has a dearth of track knowledge to overcome. Not that the Scottish driver is fazed by that prospect.
"It's obviously a bit easier with simulators and the like, but there are only two tracks I've raced on - Zandvoort and Macau - so there is definitely a lot to learn. However, I'm also a firm believer that every track is just a series of left-handers and right-handers, so if you do your homework and your preparation a professional driver should be able to hit the ground running."
