How Japan trip put Girolami on the path to the WTCR

Néstor Girolami, who was announced as part of ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport’s attack on the 2019 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO last week, was destined to join the #WTCR2019SUPERGRID as early as last autumn, as this interview from 26 October 2018 reveals.

Girolami was a visitor to WTCR JVCKENWOOD Race of Japan last season. During the WTCR Happy Hour media event, the Argentine explained why he was in Suzuka and his thoughts on racing in WTCR / OSCARO in the future, an ambition which has since turned to reality.

FIAWTCR.com: What brings you to Suzuka?
Néstor Girolami: “I was thinking to be present in some events and when my friend Esteban [Guerrieri] told me ‘do you like to go with me to Japan?’, I said ‘yes, I would like to go with you to Japan’. François Ribeiro [WTCR / OSCARO promoter] invite me to this event, it’s a very good opportunity to see the cars, to see the teams and think about the possibility someday to come back to racing in Europe.”

FIAWTCR.com: Having seen the WTCR cars on track what do you think?
Néstor Girolami: “It was impressive for me to see the high level of drivers in WTCR and it’s growing up so quick. This is a really good event with a lot of drivers fighting for a 10th of a second, it’s so close. The spirit of the category is really tight fighting and this is really good, this is the real racing.”

FIAWTCR.com: So would you like to be racing in the WTCR in the future?
Néstor Girolami: “I would like, I would really like, but at the moment I am focusing on Súper TC2000 with PEUGEOT, but some day if I can be present, why not? WTCR looks really good for next year, I hear more good drivers are coming, some are friends of mine, so why not.”
