F1 Mexican GP: Kvyat blames F1 stewards' inconsistencies

Daniil Kvyat says the FIA race stewards who decide penalties are too inconsistent in F1 and has called raising the issue 'a waste of time' as he feels drivers are not listened to.

While Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel grabbed the headlines with race steward controversies and expletive-riddles outbursts, Daniil Kvyat was slapped with a five-second time penalty for his incident with Romain Grosjean but it was rather brushed over.

The Russian driver went off track heading into the stadium section to avoid contact while passing Grosjean and despite both cars exiting track limits, Kvyat picked up a five-second time penalty in a difficult race for Toro Rosso he finished a frustrating 18th place.

Kvyat was baffled by the penalty due to its inconsistency with an almost identical incident witnessed between Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso in the previous race in Austin when the McLaren driver banged into his former team-mate sending both cars off track but didn't receive a penalty.

"I breaked late and went off but he also went off so when both cars go off nothing may happen," Kyvat explained on the Grosjean clash. "If he stayed on track then that is his position. I think he was off the track as well.

"I think they are very inconsistent these guys. I am very unhappy with how they make their decisions to be honest. There is no consistency, look at Massa and Alonso's incident in Austin then myself and Grosjean here it is a completely different reaction. I disagree with it but I have no interest in it anymore."

Asked whether he will raise his concerns at the next F1 drivers' briefing in Brazil, Kvyat was dismissive of the prospect as he feels regardless of what drivers suggest decision tend to made irrespective.

"To be honest I find it a bit boring to talk about it, it is a waste of time," he said. "Everybody talks about it but the result is still the same. In those briefings, they talk, talk, talk but they do their own thing anyway. I don't have a clear idea on how to come up with a solution. A gravel trap is a good solution."
