F1 Mexican GP: Haas needs to get better, says Steiner

Haas cannot keep resorting to justifying operational errors or problems with its cars as being down to its inexperience in Formula 1, according to boss Guenther Steiner.

Haas is enjoying an encouraging maiden F1 campaign in 2016 with drivers Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez, demonstrating consistent mid-field pace and scoring points on five occasions this year.

However, it has also been beset by niggling issues with its VF16, with Grosjean frequently complaining about set-up woes and inconsistencies with the handling, while persistent problems with its Brembo brakes has prompted the American outfit to consider a change of supplier.

Though Haas has been open about its challenges and its process of learning, with two races of the season remaining Steiner admits he doesn't want to explain away the team's failings based on its relative experience to rivals.

"We should be surprised with it [issues], I don't know how many races we did up till now but we should be actually dealing with it like the other ones. We don't want to admit we're still a new team, no that's not an excuse, because if you start to use that excuse every time you have bad Saturday you say 'we are a new team'.

"I don't know for how long, but we will always be the newest team, so we don't want to use that as an excuse, we want to get in with the people and be part of it so that the new team excuse, I don't really want to say that.

"We need to get better, we are a new team and we got into Q3 in Japan, so we just need to do better like anybody, you get bad weekends, Mexico is a bad weekend so you have to learn out of it and move on."
