F1 German Grand Prix: Hamilton reflects on ‘crazy’ 62 point swing back

Lewis Hamilton says it is 'crazy' that he heads into the summer break with a comfortable lead in the 2016 Formula 1 points' standings having transformed a 43 point deficit into a 19 point advantage in just seven races.

The three-time world champion endured a dismal start to his 2016 campaign as race incidents, technical issues and penalties in the opening five races left him well adrift of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg out of the box.

However, after the 'low' of the Spanish Grand Prix - when Rosberg and Hamilton crashed out after colliding on the opening lap - Hamilton has gone on to enjoy a stunning run of form with wins in six of the ensuing seven races.

Capping off the first half of the season with dominant wins in Hungary and Germany, despite starting behind Rosberg on the grid each time, Hamilton is delighted to have turned his fortunes around so comprehensively from such a disappointing standpoint.

"It's kind of crazy, it's gone by so quickly," he said. "It's almost like a couple of weeks ago we were in Barcelona and I was 43 points behind thinking 'Geez I might come away 50 points behind' and finding it hard to find a way through the woods...

"Through the trees and having to navigate through that and never giving up and just keep going and keep believing that the light is beyond those bushes kind of thing.

"My engineers, my mechanics have all stayed super-focused which has enabled me to also do the same and they've shown no sign of giving up, which has inspired me to do the same. I think the result just shows to never give up and I do feel really happy with my performance today.

"Not a 100% weekend, obviously yesterday wasn't the perfect qualifying but you can't always be perfect and the good thing is you can always work on it so there's better still to come."
