F1 Brazilian GP: Ocon dropped to back of the grid after blocking Palmer

Esteban Ocon will start the Brazilian Grand Prix from the back of the grid after being slapped with a three-place grid penalty for blocking Jolyon Palmer on a flying lap during qualifying.

After a number of recent incidents of blocking during qualifying the FIA confirmed race stewards would be clamping down on any drivers found guilty of the infringement.

In Q1 Ocon, who was on a slow lap after aborting a fast lap, was judged by race stewards to have impeded Palmer who was on a fast lap by staying on the racing line in the braking area at turn four.

The FIA has confirmed Ocon was on the radio to his team at the time and was not informed of Palmer approaching. Despite seeing the Renault driver in his mirrors and attempting to move out of the way he was still judged to have impeded the British driver and duly hit with a three place grid penalty.

Ocon had qualified 20th on the grid after going out in Q1 but will now start 22nd and last behind both Sauber drivers.

Despite the incident, Palmer was still able to progress through Q1 and will start the Brazilian Grand Prix from 16th on the grid.
