F1 Brazilian GP: ‘Hero to zero’ Grosjean blasts ‘terrible’ wet tyres

Romain Grosjean has described the extreme wets as 'really terrible tyres' after his hopes of a strong result in the Brazilian Grand Prix were ended by a crash before the race started.

Grosjean was due to start the wet Interlagos race from seventh place but a spin into the wall as he made his way to the grid from the pit-lane would cause enough damage for him to retire on the spot.

A dismal end to an otherwise encouraging weekend for the Frenchman, Grosjean blamed the crash on Pirelli's extreme wet weather tyres for their inability to cope with the surface water on a track.

"I am sorry for the fans and I am sorry for Haas, for the team, for everyone. We went from hero to zero in less than 24 hours. What can I say? I wasn't even flat-out, barely faster than Gutierrez [my team-mate] and the car just spun. It is just bad luck.

"[The crash] shows that the extremes are really terrible tyres and the intermediates are faster even though you have to take huge risks."

Not the only driver to crash out at the same point on the circuit - with Marcus Ericsson, Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa also hitting the wall -, Grosjean insists there was nothing he could have done differently.

"It was an on-off switch. Nothing I could control. Honestly I don't know what happened. I have seen two other cars having the same issue. So we need to improve the wet tyres. In my case I was not even pushing. Very strange."
