F1 Bahrain GP: Alonso forced out of the Bahrain Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso will not race in the Bahrain Grand Prix after he failed to pass his medical ahead of the race.

The Spaniard suffered a spectacular high-speed accident during the 2016 F1 season opening Australian Grand Prix after colliding with Haas driver Esteban Gutierrez.

Though he was able extricate himself from the McLaren Honda and walk away seemingly unharmed, an mandatory examination at the Bahrain International Circuit - required for him to race this weekend - revealed chest ailments that have forced him to be withdrawn from competition.

"Following an examination undertaken this morning at the Bahrain International Circuit Medical Centre, it has been decided that McLaren Honda F1 Team driver Fernando Alonso should not take part in this weekend's Bahrain Gran Prix. Two sets of chest CT scans were compared and it was decided that there was insufficient resolution of the signs to allow him to compete on safety grounds.

"A repeat chest scan has been requested before the Chinese Grand Prix and the result will be considered before allowing him to race there."

Alonso's withdrawal opens the door for GP2 Series champion and McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne to make his much anticipated F1 debut this weekend.
