“Euro NCAP Advanced” Award presented to Mazda at the Frankfurt Motor Show

At the Frankfurt Motor Show last week, Mazda was presented with a coveted "Euro NCAP* Advanced" award for its innovative rear vehicle monitoring system (RVM) used in the current Mazda3. NCAP began recognising car manufacturers who introduce new safety technologies that are scientifically-proven to make driving safer.

Presenting the award for Euro-NCAP at the Frankfurt Motor Show were executives Marie Brasseur, Communications Manager, and Aled Williams, Programme Manager, who is in charge of the Euro NCAP Advanced assessments. Accepting it on behalf of Mazda were Takashi Yamanouchi, Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of Mazda Motor Corporation; along with Jeff Guyton, Managing Executive Officer, President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe.

"We are especially proud to receive this award," said Jeff Guyton, "because it recognises the real-world safety benefits that our rear-vehicle monitoring system brings to our customers. It is confirmation of the hard work we put in when developing our cars to deliver superior passenger safety. Not only do most of the vehicles in our current line-up offer it, our safety engineers are constantly refining and improving our entire safety package."

Mazda's RVM system helps a driver avoid dangerous situations and collisions during a lane change. Two radar sensors mounted in each side of the rear bumper measure the distance to, and the relative speed of, surrounding vehicles in real time. The system warns the driver with a proximity indicator light if a vehicle is in the blind spot area, or a vehicle will be approaching this area in the next 5 seconds from within a zone of up to 50 m. If the driver switches on the turn signal in the direction of the approaching vehicle, the proximity light blinks rapidly and a beeper sounds to warn the driver not to change lanes. Mazda's RVM detects all types of vehicles, including motorcycles, and is designed to work in virtually every kind of weather.

Euro-NCAP awarded the RVM in the current Mazda3, but Mazda also offers it with the Mazda5, the Mazda6 and the CX-7. It will also be available - along with innovative SKYACTIV technologies - in the new compact crossover SUV CX-5 early next year.
