ERC podium at home for Fisher on “world-class” stages

Alastair Fisher believed the Circuit of Ireland showed off the "world-class" stages of Northern Ireland, having claimed an FIA European Rally Championship podium on the event.

The ‘Circuit' holds special significance for Fisher, whose late uncle Bertie won the event three times in the 1990s. Alastair finished third on his first appearance on the rally in 2010 when it was part of the Irish Tarmac championship, but crashed out when running fourth against competition from abroad in both 2012 and 2015.

This time he avoided drama in his Ford Fiesta R5 and secured an outright podium, having held third place on merit for much of the event. After winning the street stage in Newtownards on Friday evening, he was only 2.5 seconds behind second-placed Kajetan Kajetanowicz but admitted at the end of the rally that he had to focus on holding onto his position, which also gave him maximum points towards the Irish Tarmac standings.

"We could have battled a bit more but we had to get to the finish," he said. "It has been a great weekend and a great rally for the country. These stages are really world-class."
