Ecclestone 'envious' of Carey's short-term focus in F1

Former Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone admits that he is "envious" replacement Chase Carey can make changes that help the sport in the short-term, having been forced to play the long game in recent years when making decisions.

Ecclestone's 40-year reign of F1 came to an end in January when Liberty Media completed its takeover of the sport, with American executive Carey becoming CEO and chairman.

While Ecclestone was given the honorary role of chairman emeritus, the 86-year-old is no longer involved with the day-to-day running of F1.

Carey said earlier this week that he felt Ecclestone missed opportunities to grow F1, stressing that Liberty wants to be more positive and proactive in making changes.

Speaking to Press Association, Ecclestone responded by saying that he was not able to make decisions that would be good for F1 in the short-term as his objectives under previous owner CVC were different, prioritising long-term planning.

"The only reason I ever said no to anything is I thought it wasn't a very good thing to do or it didn't produce any income," Ecclestone said.

"This business about a short-term focus is the only thing that I am a little bit envious that Chase has got and I never had.

"I was running the company as a chief executive to make profits and make the value of the company worth a lot more because the major shareholder, CVC Capital Partners, wanted to sell.

"Maybe there are things I missed. Hopefully it moves forward. I don't want to see something I spent 40 years building up and spending most of my life doing to be dumpe.

"I would be delighted to say it is doing fantastic, and I was part of that."
