Debate of the Day: Who is Ferrari's greatest ever F1 driver?

Who is the greatest Formula 1 driver in history to wear the scarlet red of Ferrari? It's our forum debate of the day.

There has arguably been no greater or more influential team in the history of Formula 1 than Scuderia Ferrari, having been synonymous with the sport since the formation of the world championship back in 1950.

Since then, a large number of F1's greatest drivers have donned the scarlet red colours of the Italian manufacturer, including the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio, Niki Lauda, Gilles Villeneuve, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso.

But who is the greatest of them all?

There is a strong case for Schumacher, who is statistically recognised as being the greatest driver in all of F1 history. The German won five consecutive world titles with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004, ending a 21-year drought since its last title.

Going much further back, Alberto Ascari was Ferrari's first world champion in 1952, while the likes of Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill and John Surtees also enjoyed success with the Prancing Horse.

Or could Ferrari's greatest driver be one who did not win a title while with the team? The likes of Gilles Villeneuve and Fernando Alonso are both widely recognised as being two F1 legends, yet neither took a world title for Ferrari despite coming very close.
