D-30: Huff on “special place” as WTCR China countdown continues
Rob Huff has described China, which hosts the upcoming the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO doubleheader, as a "very special place".
Huff, who drives a Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR for Sébastien Loeb Racing in WTCR OSCARO, is a regular visitor to China in his multiple role as race driver, test driver and driver coach.
The Chinese cities of Ningbo (28-30 September) and Wuhan (5-7 October) host the next two WTCR OSCARO race weekends and Huff can't wait to take part.
"Motorsport in China is coming on in leaps and bounds," said Huff. "They're bringing their racing right into the new era, and they're using European motorsport as the benchmark as it's known for being the best in the world. They want their racing to be at the same level, which is why they have started to bring in engineers and drivers from Europe. The result is a very cross-cultural and collaborative sporting environment, with fantastic manufacturer brands competing to showcase their latest models in one of the most important car markets in the world.
"I do a lot of work in China with Volkswagen on developing its China Touring Car Championship car, and also coaching the drivers on how to get the most of it. We've developed the Volkswagen Lamando GTS over the last two years and it won the manufacturers' championship last year with the aim to do the same again this year.
"Although racing is often the best way of helping out, I've been out there a few times just to be on hand to help the drivers on how to address set-up problems, and to adapt the car to the very special circuits that the China championship races at.
"I've found China a very special place for me and certainly have a built good working relationships as well as a reputation."
