D-10: New lap record to beat as WTCR China countdown continues
With 10 days to go until the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup fires into life at WTCR Race of China-Ningbo, drivers will be aware of a new qualifying lap record to beat.
Set by former FIA World Touring Car Championship driver André Couto during a TCR China event, the qualifying benchmark now stands at 1m52.774s, which the Macanese driver set in a Honda Civic Type R TCR at an average speed of 128.00kph on 31 August. Andy Yan (Audi RS 3 LMS) clocked the previous best lap in October 2017, a 1m53.178s at an average speed of 127.55kph.
However, rain on race day meant Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR driver Sunny Wong's 1m53.355s from October 2017 remains the race lap record around the 4.010-kilometre Ningbo International Speedpark.
Ningbo hosts the first part of the China WTCR OSCARO double-header from 28-30 September. It's followed by the Wuhan street-racing spectacular from 5-7 October. Leading Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua was recently confirmed in a Boutsen Ginion Racing Honda Civic Type R TCR for both events.
