Capito set for Spa debut as McLaren CEO

Volkswagen director of motorsport Jost Capito says he is expecting to begin in his new role as McLaren CEO ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix in August.

McLaren announced Capito's appointment in January, though the switch to Woking would only go ahead once a successor was in place at VW.

With eight rounds of the 2016 F1 season already completed, Capito says he expects to start work in his new role with McLaren during the mid-season shutdown ahead of the Spa round.

"It will be the end of August, beginning of September, something around that region," Capito confirmed to reporters at the FIA Sport Conference in Turin.

Overseeing all of VW's motorsport activities, Capito says he has had little time to focus on how McLaren has been performing so far this season but expects to be able to hit the ground running when he does switch his full attention to Formula One.

"I've not [been observing McLaren] - the job at VW is such a big job. It's not only WRC, it's rallycross in the US, it's TCR... As long as I'm there, I'm doing a proper job there.

"When you come into the [F1] paddock you still see the same faces, just older. But I don't see that because I'm older too! I don't see a lot of changing; of course the cars change, the technology changes, but it's still Formula One."

The Belgian Grand Prix takes place on the last weekend of August, this year marking the first round of back-to-back races also including the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
