Bennani looks to 2019 convinced of WTCR success
Mehdi Bennani believes “success will smile” on him in season two of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO.
Bennani was one of 15 drivers to claim race wins during the inaugural campaign. However, a heavy crash at WTCR Race of Portugal in late June left him struggling for form and questioning his desire to continue competing at the wheel of his Sébastien Loeb Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.
A Macau Guia Race winner in 2017, Bennani suffered two retirements during the WTCR season showdown but finished seventh in Race 2 to ensure a top-12 finish in the final standings.
“We’re finishing the season on a very positive note as we were well placed compared to our top speed,” said the Moroccan. “I think we had a really good car to fight at the front and I’d like to thank the whole team for all their hard work this year. Unfortunately, I was caught up in two crashes and had to retire each time. On this type of circuit, the tiniest collision can have dramatic consequences and cause serious damage to the car so I preferred not to take risks. Even so, I managed to clinch a top-10 finish.
“Overall, I had some bad luck during the season although I’m convinced that success will smile on me in 2019.”
