Basso cooking on gas at home – and keen on ERC return
Giandomenico Basso has reaffirmed his desire to return to the FIA European Rally Championship and chase a third title in the future after he finished second on the opening round of his domestic series at the weekend.
The Italian, who claimed ERC title gold in 2006 and 2009, took the runner-up spot on the all-asphalt Rally del Ciocco behind multiple Italian champion Paolo Andreucci.
Basso was driving an innovative Ford Fiesta R5 powered solely by liquid petroleum gas, which he wants to bring to the ERC one day.
"At the moment, the regulations don't permit us to run this car outside of the Italian Rally Championship, but of course if it were ever possible in the future my dream would be to drive it in the current ERC," he said.
Andreucci has also starred in the ERC in the past - notably on the legendary Rallye Sanremo, which previously formed part of the ERC and is now the next round of the Italian Rally Championship in April.
