After tough times López hopes for good times on ERC return

Pepe López, one of Spain’s leading young rallying talents, has revealed how a tough 2018 is making success in 2019 even more satisfying.

López impressed for the Peugeot Rally Academy in the 2017 FIA ERC1 Junior Championship but was left without a drive until midway through last season.

He has made the most of the opportunities handed to him since and now leads the Spanish asphalt standings ahead of this week’s Rally Islas Canarias, which counts for ERC and national championship points.

“Last year was really tough because I had to wait a lot to be in the car,” said the 23-year-old. “But I am proud to be again with a good programme and I will do my best with this opportunity. For all rallies I start with the objective of trying to win and it will be no different here.”

While Spanish points are key, by registering for ERC1 Junior López is more than aware of the additional benefit a good result would bring.

“As we are competing in the ERC we keep in mind to keep a strong position because it could be really interesting,” said López, who will drive a Citroën C3 R5.
