No other manufacturer has achieved such impressive results at the world’s toughest endurance race. With the innovative Porsche 919 Hybrid, Earl Bamber (NZ), Nico Hülkenberg (D) and Nick Tandy (GB) won the coveted title exactly 45 years to the day after Porsche’s very first overall victory at the Sarthe. Their team mates Timo Bernhard (D), Brendon Hartley (NZ) and Mark Webber (AUS) finished second and completed the 1-2 for Porsche. The US race driver and actor Patrick Dempsey celebrated the biggest success of his racing career by coming in second with a Porsche 911 RSR in the GTE-Am class . Porsche made its début in 2014 with the most innovative drive system in the WEC starting field. The concept was created and refined in a team led by LMP1 Technical Director Alexander Hitzinger. All drive system components were optimised for the 2015 season. The combustion efficiency of the now lighter and more rigid 2-litre V4 turbocharged petrol engine has been increased, for example. The V engine’s load-bearing function (90 degree cylinder bank angle) within the chassis was also optimised by means of geometric adjustments that have led to better overall rigidity. The previously used centralised exhaust tract has been replaced by a twin exhaust-pipe system in order to improve output and optimise the vehicle’s aerodynamics. The 500-hp combustion engine powers the rear axle. Higher output at a lower weight were achieved by a complete redesign of the energy recovery systems. The kinetic energy produced at the front axle when braking is converted into electrical energy. That’s the first energy recovery system – the second is installed in the exhaust tract, where the exhaust-gas stream drives a second turbine (in parallel with the turbocharger) that acts as a generator. The electricity thus produced – along with that generated by the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) at the front axle – is temporarily stored in lithium-ion battery cells. The driver can call up power from the cells, and if he engages the full-boost function, additional power output of more than 400 hp will thrust him back into his seat. This power is applied to the front axle by the electric motor, and it temporarily transforms the 919 Hybrid into an all-wheel drive race car with system power of nearly 1,000 hp. Nicolas "Nico" Hülkenberg (German pronunciation: [ˈniːko ˈhʏlkənbɛɐ̯k], born 19 August 1987) is a German professional racing driver and winner of the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans currently racing for the Sahara Force India Formula 1 Team. In 2015 he will also contest in two rounds of the 2015 World Endurance Championship for Porsche. He was the 2009 champion of the GP2 Series, and is a previous champion of both the Formula 3 Euro Series and A1 Grand Prix, as part of A1 Team Germany. He is one of three drivers since 2005 to win the GP2 series championship in his debut season, the others being Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Earl Anderson Bamber[1] (born 9 July 1990) is a professional racing driver from New Zealand, currently competing in the North American United SportsCar Championship in the GT Le Mans class as a factory driver for Porsche.[2] He is the reigning Porsche Supercup and double Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion.[3] He won the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans with Nico Hülkenberg and Nick Tandy. Nick Tandy (born 5 November 1984) is a professional British racing driver and winner of the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Porsche 919 Hybrid is a sports-prototype racing car constructed by the German car manufacturer Porsche for use in the Le Mans Prototype 1-Hybrid (LMP1-H) category of the FIA World Endurance Championship for factory-supported hybrid-powered cars. It is the first sports-prototype built by Porsche since the RS Spyder, the first sports-prototype built by Porsche to compete in a top category of sportscar racing since the Porsche 911 GT1-98 and Porsche LMP1-98 and the first sports-prototype to be raced by Porsche as a racing team since the Porsche 911 GT1-98 and Porsche LMP1-98. It utilises a 2.0 L four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a battery-based hybrid system.[2] The car made its competitive début at the 2014 6 Hours of Silverstone, the opening round of the 2014 season. The 919 nomenclature is a reference to the successful Porsche 917 of the 1970s, and the Porsche 918 production sports car that the company débuted in 2013.
