WTCR racers Coronel, Ehrlacher planning 25 hours of Fun
Tom Coronel and Yann Ehrlacher will swap their Honda Civic Type R TCRs for an adapted, race-ready version of the classic Volkswagen Beetle for an endurance event with a difference at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium this weekend.
The WTCR OSCARO racers are taking part in The 25 Hours VW Fun Cup at the Belgian Grand Prix venue from 16h00 local time today (Saturday).
Coronel and Ehrlacher, who drive for Boutsen Ginion Racing and ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport respectively in the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO, are linking up with former FIA World Touring Car Championship racer Pierre-Yves Corthals as part of a five-driver team.
"It's 110 cars in the field and it's big competition when you see the trucks in the paddock," said Dutchman Coronel. "There are people putting in a lot of effort, a lot of preparation and a big commitment to do well. Yann and me will have a lot of fun and it's nice. He's our future in racing and is really good. Normally he is one of my biggest opponents because we have the same car [in WTCR OSCARO] and he is kicking my ass but not this time!"
Frenchman Ehrlacher, who is 24 years Coronel's junior, added: "It's so professional, it's crazy! I did the race in 2015 and we were fourth in the night when we crashed so we ‘DNF'. But it's the first time I am team-mates with Tom and we are already having so much fun you cannot believe. Spa is a great track, maybe the car is not going fast enough but driving at night is going to be insane."
After joining forces at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend, Coronel and Ehrlacher will renew their rivalry for WTCR OSCARO glory at the Slovakia Ring from 13-15 July.
