WRC future for Rally Mexico

A new deal has been struck to secure Mexico's position as a round of the FIA World Rally Championship.

An extension to the event's existing contract confirming a slot in the 2017 calendar was agreed this week by the organisers of Rally Guanajuato Corona and the WRC Promoter.

Mexico made its debut in the WRC in 2004 and its slick organisation and rugged gravel stages made it a popular addition with teams and drivers.

Based in the country's fifth largest city of León, 400km north-west of Mexico City, highlights include a spectacular start ceremony in the historic city of Guanajuato and the high-altitude roads in the Sierra de Lobos and Sierra de Guanajuato mountains.

It has remained part of the WRC calendar ever since, with the exception of 2009 when it was absent due to the event rotation system.

Organisers have confirmed that long term backers, the State of Guanajuato and the cities of León, Silao, Guanajuato and Irapuato, have pledged to continue their support of the rally, assuring the success of the upcoming years.
