WRC 2 in Mexico: Guerra takes first home victory

Benito Guerra secured his first WRC 2 victory in comprehensive fashion as he won Rally Guanajuato Mexico by more than three minutes.

The Skoda Fabia R5 driver, who was born in Mexico City, acknowledged after Sunday’s opening Alfaro test that he just needed to keep it clean in order to take victory in front of a passionate home crowd. Sixth overall equalled his best WRC finish.

Guerra said: “It’s a great result. The best result ever and my first victory in WRC 2. I have been fighting for this win for two years. I am so happy that my first time is in México!”

Guerra’s steady pace allowed 18-year-old rising star Marco Bulacia to take two stage wins today in his Fabia en route to second. He finished 3min 16.0sec behind Guerra after a costly puncture on Saturday.

Restarting after retiring with broken steering yesterday, Ford Fiesta driver Alberto Heller had a troublefree run to claim the final podium spot.

His brother, Pedro, failed to make the finish, retiring on the day’s second stage, Mesa Cuata.

Pieniazek takes the points in WRC 2 Pro

M-Sport Ford World Rally Team’s Lukasz Pieniazek had a clean run through the final three stages at the first long-haul rally of the season.

The Pole, who was the only Pro entrant, crashed his Fiesta R5 on Friday, but restarted on day two and secured a maximum 25 points for the championship battle.  

He said: “I am pleased I made it to the finish. Next year I will be more confident for sure, these stages are very demanding."
