Why Michelisz’s qualifying prowess made him a WTCC winner
Norbert Michelisz's strong FIA World Touring Car Championship season didn't just earn him the prestigious runner-up spot - he also clinched the DHL Pole Position Award for his qualifying prowess.
The Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team driver qualified at the head of the pack on three occasions in 2017 with pole laps at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Vila Real and Twin Ring Motegi.
"If you look at my season I was able to come back in the points because I was strong in qualifying, so it's worth to exploit what you have in qualifying," said Michelisz, who lost out on the overall title to Thed Björk in a thrilling season finale in Qatar.
Rob Huff claimed two poles in 2017, with Björk, his Polestar Racing team-mates Nicky Catsburg and Néstor Girolami, Esteban Guerrieri and Tiago Monteiro all landing one top Main Race start.
Meanwhile, Honda celebrated five poles, Volvo Polestar three and privateer Citroën team ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport two.
