Volkswagen up! “The best cars of 2012”: eight first-place rankings for the Volkswagen Group

Readers of the automotive magazine 'auto motor und sport' were asked to pick the 'Best cars of 2012' from a pool of over 300 vehicles. After the votes were in, the Volkswagen Group was the most successful carmaker with a total of eight first-place rankings. Vehicles of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA brands and Porsche took home a total of eight top awards. The awards ceremony was held today, Thursday, in Stuttgart.

The 'Best cars of 2012' were chosen in ten categories, and each category had an overall winner and an import winner. In the class of 'Mini cars', the Volkswagen brand took first place with the up! city specialist. Winning in the 'Small car' category was the Audi A1, followed by the Volkswagen Polo in second place.

In overall competition in the 'Mid-class' category, the Audi A4/ Allroad / A5 won the coveted top ranking, while the ŠKODA Superb was picked the best import car in the same category.

The Volkswagen Group captured all three top places in the 'Vans' category: the Multivan emerged as the winner in reader voting, while second and third places went to Volkswagen's Sharan and Touran, respectively. Winning in the import award in the 'Vans' category was the SEAT Alhambra.

In the 'Luxury class' category, Porsche came out ahead in the competition with the Panamera. The Stuttgart-based company also won in the 'Sports car' group with the Porsche 911 Carrera / Turbo.
