Volkswagen Golf tweaked ahead of WTCR 2018
The title-winning Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR will have a new look when it hits the tracks in 2018 with its front end reworked to match the appearance of its road-going equivalent.
Shown to the public during the Essen Motor Show in Germany last month, the tweaked machine will be ready for delivery to customer teams during January ahead of the inaugural FIA World Touring Car Cup for TCR cars getting underway in Morocco from 7-8 April.
Sven Smeets, Volkswagen Motorsport Director, explained the design change: "The new look for the Golf GTI TCR resulted from close cooperation with Volkswagen Design. This helps us to underline just what a close relationship exists between the production model and the racing version. For example, the engine comes directly from series production and only requires minimal adjustment for competitive racing. This is proof that the Golf GTI provides the perfect foundation for our customer racing cars."
The Golf GTI TCR enjoyed considerable success in 2017. Frenchman Jean-Karl Vernay won the TCR International Series drivers' title, Kantadhee Kusiri took the TCR Asia Crown, Francisco Abreu claimed top TCR Iberico honours, while the Golf GTI TCR was Model of the Year in TCR International.
