Tarquini back in contention but WTCR title talk premature
Gabriele Tarquini's first podium in the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO since late April has put him back into contention for winning the title - not that the Italian is contemplating such a prospect.
Despite illness, Tarquini placed P2 in Race 3 at WTCR Race of Portugal last month to end a barren run, which included non-scoring weekends in Germany and The Netherlands.
Referring to the WTCR OSCARO title fight, the well again BRC Racing Team driver Tarquini said: "I'm there but we are midway, there are a lot of points until the end of the season. It's quite early to say something about the candidates to the title. If I am there with two weekends to go, I will consider the title. At the moment I enjoy the races, I enjoy the race weekends, but I don't want to think more than this."
Tarquini, the 2009 World Touring Car champion, won three of the opening six races in his Hyundai i30 N TCR. He heads to WTCR Race of Slovakia next week (13-15 July) equal second in the championship with Yann Ehrlacher, 22 points long-term rival Yvan Muller.
