Supercar spectacle at british round
Flame-spitting group B cars will return to the dayinsure Wales Rally GB (27 - 30 october) programme 30 years after they were outlawed from the FIA World Rally Championship
The event will showcase the fearsome supercars at the fan-friendly Cholmondeley Castle special stage, which closes the Saturday leg at the penultimate round of the 2016 WRC season.
In November 1986, Britain's round of the WRC marked the final time the Group B monsters would compete in Europe before they were culled from the sport for safety reasons following a series of accidents.
More than 50 Group B cars roared through the British forests with world champion Juha Kankkunen, Markku Alen, Stig Blomqvist, Malcolm Wilson and eventual winner Timo Salonen driving supercars such as Lancia Delta S4s, Peugeot 205 T16s and MG Metro 6R4s.
Many of these iconic machines will gather at the Cholmondeley stage, either as part of a static display or to perform demonstration runs over the same roads that will host the 2016 WRC stars a few hours later.
"These epic Group B monsters really caught the public's imagination back in the eighties and it's no surprise that they continue to do so today," said rally managing director Ben Taylor.
"It was in Britain that most of them last appeared on a World Rally Championship event, so we have a great opportunity to do something really special in October."
