Shedden quickest of all as WTCR testing concludes in Barcelona
Gordon Shedden completed the WTCR Official Test at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on top in his Leopard Racing Team Audi Sport RS 3 LMS.
Following two days of running in warm and dry conditions, Shedden set his best lap on Friday afternoon, ending up with a benchmark effort of 1m54.434s.
But while the test marked the first occasion that the majority of the #WTCR2019SUPERGRID have been on track at the same time, differing strategies, set-ups and test programmes meant the times were not considered entirely representative by the drivers compared to what’s to come when the new season opens in Morocco next week.
“Let’s not get carried away, everybody’s playing about doing lots of different strange, weird and wonderful things,” Shedden said afterwards. “The lap time isn’t actually that fast but we made some good progress on the car, we’re working hard at it, but today means absolutely nothing, it’s about next week.
“We were just trying lots of different things, trying to understand the car because winter testing has been a bit limited. Everything has been just information-gathering these last two days, now we’ve got to digest it and understand the best way forward for Marrakech.”
Néstor Girolami, who was fastest this morning with a 1m54.884s at the wheel of an ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR, bettered his time this afternoon with a 1m54.884s best to go second quickest.
Thursday’s pacesetter, Esteban Guerrieri, was third fastest overall with Shedden’s team-mate Jean-Karl Vernay fourth and Team Mulsanne Alfa Romeo pair Ma Qinghua and Kevin Ceccon fifth and sixth respectively.
Niels Langeveld, Attila Tassi, Daniel Haglöf and Yann Ehrlacher filled the top 10 places with Rob Huff P11 and Spain’s Mikel Azcona P12.
The 2019 WTCR / OSCARO seasons begins at WTCR AFRIQUIA Race of Morocco from 5-7 April.
