Rego brings more ERC cheer to the Azores with fine R5 debut
While Ricardo Moura claimed a home victory on the Azores Airlines Rallye, fellow local driver Luís Rego Jr also delivered an impressive drive.
The 25-year-old Azorean, who won the ERC Production Cup on the São Miguel spectacular in 2014, was driving a Ford Fiesta R5 for the first time after many years in a Group N Mitsubishi.
Despite having to run first on the road on day one and suffering a puncture over the first run of the Sete Cidades stage, Rego displayed great pace over leg two - in fact, he placed third on the leg classification, behind only Moura and Alexey Lukyanuk who fought for the win until the final stage.
Seventh overall, Rego finished two places lower than in 2014, but was only 17.2 seconds away from fourth-placed Dávid Botka. He was navigated by veteran co-driver Carlos Magalhães, a three-time winner of the Azores Rallye.
