Muller is the WTCC’s all-time best, according to media vote
Yvan Muller, the most successful driver in the history of the FIA World Touring Car Championship has also been voted the best of all-time following a vote by WTCC media.
Representing 18 countries, media were asked to consider their top three drivers from 2005-2017 - the period when the championship was promoted by Eurosport Events - with points allocated on a 3-2-1 basis.
Muller, the four-time champion who has more wins, pole positions, fastest laps and laps led than any other driver, scored 64 points with José María López - who effectively deposed Muller as the king of the WTCC with the first of three titles in 2014 - netting 45 points.
Gabriele Tarquini, the 2009 champion, scored 18 points, triple title-winner Andy Priaulx 15 and Rob Huff three. Alain Menu, Tiago Monteiro, Tom Coronel and Norbert Michelisz also received points.
Muller's achievements struck a chord with Serbiaring.com's Aleksandar Babic. "It's not only the numbers which make him the best WTCC driver, it's also about the finesse, skill, car control, speed, knowledge and quality shown not only during the race weekends, but in car development."
Touringcars.net's Andrew Abbott put López ahead of Muller in his voting. "Although only in the WTCC for three full seasons, and in the most dominant car, López made such a mark that he has to go down as the all-time great," Abbott wrote. "The Argentine is part of an elite group of drivers to win on their début, and he easily had the better of vastly more experienced team-mate Yvan Muller in the Citroën."
