Malaysia WTCR wildcard Cheah serves notice of intent with Sepang victory
Mitchell Cheah, who is set to be handed wildcard status when the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO visits his native Malaysia in December, underlined his potential with a race win at the Sepang International Circuit yesterday (Saturday).
Cheah won the first part of the TCR Malaysia finale with a lights-to-flag victory in a Liqui Moly Team Engstler Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR. He finished ahead of Hyundai-powered German Luca Engstler, for whom second place was enough to clinch the TCR Malaysia title.
While Cheah couldn’t repeat his Race 1 victory in the Sepang weekend’s second counter, runner-up spot behind Engstler still marked a strong result for the 20-year-old Malaysian, who is set to contest the TCR Germany series ahead of a wildcard entry at the WTCR / OSCARO super-finale in Sepang from 12-15 December.
