Liuzzi cruises to lead the Italian Superstars Championship at Portimao

It's been a perfect weekend for Team Mercedes-AMG Romeo Ferraris at Portimão, with Vitantonio Liuzzi ending up twice as a runner-up and Thomas Biagi finishing third in Race 1.

The two podium finishes by the former F.1 driver enabled him to clinch the lead in the Italian SUPERSTARS Championship, which involved Monza and Portimão so far and will also include the two closing round of the 2013 season at Imola (September 29th) and Vallelunga (October 13th).

With his third place in Race 1, Thomas Biagi retained his lead in the International Series. He's now tracked by Audi Sport Italia's Gianni Morbidelli, who cruised to two wins in Portugal. Morbidelli is now just three points back in standings.

The works Mercedes squad has even more reasons to celebrate as they lead the Teams standings. Mercedes-AMG Romeo Ferraris has 265 followed by Audi Sport Italia (181) and Team BMW Dinamic (159).

"I'm very satisfied with this season so far - told Team Manager Mario Ferraris - we started off well both with Vitantonio and Thomas as they shared victories at Monza and also scored more wins along the way at Brno and Slovakia Ring. On the other hand, we're quite concerned by the Audi RS5 of Gianni Morbidelli. Their four-wheel-drive system might make the difference on the track we have to face now but I'm sure of the skills and potential of our drivers. They could well hand us the title we have been looking for in the last four years of hard work in SUPERSTARS".

"After Portimão I'm still on top in standings and this is one of the most positive notes of our Portuguese weekend - said Thomas Biagi - although my gap was trimmed in a considerable way despite the great commitment we put in each race. After the summer break we'll be at Donington Park, not a favourable venue for us on paper, but I'm sure that the team will find new solutions to make our cars even more competitive".
